Birding safari
Swamps, soda lakes and forest across the northern parks, with a guide who stops for the birds as readily as for the lions.
Northern Tanzania packs very different habitats into a short drive, and each brings its own birds.
- Tarangire: the swamps at the heart of the park draw saddle-billed storks, African fish eagles, tawny eagles and lilac-breasted rollers, especially in the green season.
- Arusha National Park: waterbirds and flamingos on the Momela Lakes, and raptors in the forest of Mount Meru. Migrant species are present from about October to April.
- Lake Manyara: flamingos on the soda lake and forest birds along the groundwater forest.
Bring binoculars, one pair per person if you can.
