The Great Migration
Follow the wildebeest and zebra herds through the Serengeti, from the calving plains to the Mara River crossings.
Every year the wildebeest of the Serengeti, with zebra and gazelle among them, walk a long loop between Tanzania and Kenya's Maasai Mara, following the rain to fresh grass. No single animal leads; the herds move when the grass runs out.
Through the year
- January to March: calving on the southern short-grass plains. Calves are on their feet within minutes and running with the herd within hours, and predators are close by.
- April to June: the rut, as the herds begin to move.
- July to October: the herds reach the north and cross the Mara River, where crocodiles wait.
The timing shifts with the rain every year. Tell us when you can travel and we will plan the camps around where the herds are most likely to be.
